Joy of Design
Winners were selected from 521 works. As in last year, one prize was awarded as "Encouragement Award" by consensus.
Total number of entry: 521
Entry passed the first round judgement: 98
The design represents the pure simplicity without any decoration. That is challenging in and of itself. Thin lines are not just lines, but surface which continues infinitely and it also indicates incomplete and unknown possibility. The texture expresses traces of time. Etched lines express powerful feeling of glacial striations, and primitive beauty of nature.
Ryo Takarada
The set of scratch-like lines become a big power, and create dynamic face. This is by far the best quality design which beyond the preconceived notion of “wallpaper.” I would like to adopt this design for the space where I make a plan.
Mitsuko Kuroda
With its craft-like design method, I felt this is a new way of approach to wallpaper design. It seems like it could be used more effectively in an open public space versus a home.
Shogo Kishino
Although it is not colorful, it features compelling texture. The horizontal lines are stylishly interrupted by the wall paper joints as a part of the design.
Shosuke Yasuda
The idea itself is amazing, and the design is well commercialized as wallpaper. The presentation is also great.
The open window figures are cut out and they are representing an “Airy, free world.”
I hope that viewers can appreciate the unusual shape of the window figures, which look different from actual windows.
Ryo Takarada
This large-pattern design seems familiar but is unique. I think it could be more interesting by changing the window's scale and produce it in large size purposely.
Mitsuko Kuroda
Fresh color and simple design has exciting potential for interior design. It could even be used with different size variations.
Shogo Kishino
I like this the best visually speaking. The design really pushes the envelope as a wallpaper.
Shosuke Yasuda
The bold composition with large pattern works effective.
The dot pattern exemplifies the Japanese flag and is complimented by curved lines resembling fish tails and flower petals, giving an overall feeling of warmth and happiness.
Cats are curled up in the most relaxed position with plant seeds around them, and plants are growing from the seeds. The design conveys the idea of having good dreams like the sleeping cats.
Inspired from images of a scenery with white birch trees in of my hometown, blue sky, sunshine and outside temperature. I imagined the space where the viewer can experience outside without leaving the house.
Seen from far distance, the design looks like dots and lines, but as the viewer comes closer, the faces of an original cartoon character come into focus. The Japanese title “Chikako” is a play on words referring to its visual flickering (Chika chika-suru in Japanese) effect of the character motifs.
Since last year, "Sangetsu Employees Award" is given to one entry. The entry is voted on and selected by the Sangetsu employees from those entries that passed through the first stage (excluding the entries that received one of the 6 awards).
In Japan, the “crane” is auspicious in meaning symbolizing good fortune and a long life. The design shows the cranes flapping their wings, exemplifying a forward-looking outlook.
When selecting a wallpaper for work, it is hard to find something that is matches exactly what I am looking for. However, this Grand Prize winning design is exactly that. This design offers not only simplicity and depth, but also luxury. The level of entries are steadily becoming higher and we are hoping that this awards will generate unique designs that might be difficult to produce with current techniques but could potentially become possible in the future. We are also hoping for designs which contain three-dimensional, time axis or something new ideas not only with two-dimensional designs.
I think now there are more designs that can be used as actual wallpaper. I was focusing on the perspective of designer rather than user and try to make a selection from the point of view of what kind of designs are desirable yet still fresh and creative. The Grand Prize winner is succeeding in both demonstrating high creative skills as expressionist and contribute to raise the level of this award. On the other hand, Award for Excellence is graphical and expansive work. I think that the various award winning entries offer a good balance overall.
As this is the second time awards and there were references from the last year, I think we had more accomplished designs than last year. I feel like there were many designs that were positive and bright. I judged based on the “Originality of the design from a competition perspective,” “Product potential” and the “Intuitive impression”. Colors were important element too. I think there was a tendency to focus on designs which were not too pictorial, not too complicated, and not space-constraining as “wall” is such a huge area.
One of the objective of this award is to integrate a new idea or concept to the wallpaper. I am hoping to see something beyond our imagination, who are related to this business. Being the second time, I came across entries in this competition that offered more unique ideas and bold graphics. The design by Mr.Yamada, who won this award for two years in succession, is of course creative. what is more, the convincing factor for all the judges was it was well considered wallcovering product from the point of view of commercial design. Furthermore, we made selections for Encouragement Award according to the purpose for cultivating talented designers and creators from the next generation. I am looking forward to see more fresh ideas at the next Sangetsu Wallpaper Design Awards which will be held on over the coming years.

The “2018 Sangetsu Wallpaper Design Awards” ceremony was performed at the Sangetsu Shinagawa showroom on November 27. The winners and the winning entries were presented with various media outlets present.
Mr.Yasuda (CEO of Sangetsu Corporation), chairman of judging committee, gave his remarks first on the awards this year and then spoke about his hopes for the award competition next year and beyond. All the judges who have participated since last year noted that the overall level of the entries was higher than last year. On the other hand, some judges felt that while many entries were well-suited for actual wallpaper, more unique designs are preferred for our competition.
This year, three students were receiving awards and the younger generation's work were highly-rated. (Natsumi Fujita – Award for Excellence, Hazuki Takano – Honorable Mention, and Nanase Kobayashi – Encouragement Award). All appeared nervous while receiving their trophies and gave speeches indicating how happy they were to receive the awards. In addition, Mr. Yamada received the Grand Prize for the second time. He spoke calmly but passionate about making the design.
There was a photo session after the awards ceremony. The award winners were surrounded by the judges and the media personnel, asking questions about each of their concepts and creative process. They spoke about their thought and behind stories of their work and it became precious time.

The “2018 Sangetsu Wallpaper Design Awards” competition is being held for the second time after its debut in 2017. Entries were received from within Japan and from abroad. There were 521 entries which exceeded last year’s total entries, and there were 4 judges who provided a strict evaluation and assessment of each entry.
The judges in attendance are the same members as last year. Based on their own profession and expertise, they provided their feedback from various perspectives, including the potential expression on a wall, the daring and trendy expression of the graphics, the expression as a wallpaper product as well as the presentation of the entry itself.
Massive works covered the 2nd floor of the showroom, which was the primary judging area. It was not an easy task to carefully look and evaluate each work one by one. The atmosphere was serious. It took almost 2 hours to select 98 entries for the secondary stage.
During the secondary judging stage, the entries were re-evaluated from the different point of view from the first stage. There was very active discussion during this stage. Differences of opinions were seen right up until a decision was made to advance entries to the final stage. At this stage, the entries overall exhibited a higher standard. At this point, the entry was evaluated as a wallpaper product from a technical and practical perspective, and the entry was checked while asking for feedback from the product development staff.
The judges were also surprised to learn that Shigeru Yamada won the Grand Prize again. The evaluations noted the design’s appeal and overall outstanding balance that it displayed. Despite the variety of entries that were selected to win the Award for Excellence and Honorable Mention, there was a trend among them displaying an open theme with a high degree of abstract graphics. Nanase Kobayashi received the Encouragement Award. The judges decided to confer this award because of the intriguing and unique elements of this entry expanding the potential scope of the awards and giving inspiration to applicants in future competitions.
Sangetsu provides interior decorating materials for various spaces, such as homes, commercial facilities, offices, hotels and medical care and welfare facilities in order to share with people the joy of designing spaces. However, we do not just supply interior decorating materials, but design to bring joy and comfort to space. Last year as part of our corporate activities, we held our first competition: the“ Sangetsu Wallpaper Design Awards 2017”, and received many entries. Thanks to all works that were submitted, we felt that there are still many more wallcovering possibilities and therefore decided to hold the “Sangetsu Wallpaper Design Awards 2018” this year as well.
Joy of Design
What exactly is a wallcovering that inspires feelings or evokes a sensitivity in people to create a new space or to use that space to impart joy and excitement?
Hospital rooms that brighten and lift people's mood, hotels that are memorable, classrooms that encourage active communication, offices that boost work productivity, restaurants that bring in repeat customers and homes that encourage a richer life.
One wallcovering can not only create a sense of comfort but even alter the expressions of people.
Wallcoverings have a powerful role in interior design.
Of course we are looking for product designs with beauty and functionality. We are also seeking fresh ideas and designs that people can freely enjoy, or with that potential for those who create spaces as well as those who spend time in them.
We invite you to work with Sangetsu to create the value of new designs.

What type of wallcovering material can be used?
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is a common material used for wallcoverings, where the back side is made of a paper (lining paper) substrate over which an adhesive paste is spread to coat the paper.
Other special materials besides PVC include washi (traditional Japanese paper), paper, fabric, diatomaceous earth, foil (gold or silver), cork and lacquer. There are also other materials attached with sequins or glass beads.
As mentioned in the special notes, our wallcovering products are made in rolls with a width of 92 cm. Therefore, three dimensional expressions such as surfaces with lots of concavo-convex are not allowed.
If a material is specified that is difficult to produce in rolls, it will be difficult to make that into a product.
Please consider using thin and flexible material that is suitable for use as a wallcovering.
If the design is difficult to make into a product, we may ask you to change the material.
Does the wallcovering have to be applied vertically?
In addition, can I use different methods to apply (horizontally or in parts) the wallcovering and incorporate such methods into my design?
The wallcovering can also be applied in a horizontal direction.
We also accept designs that are based on a horizontal application or ones that are applied in parts.
Does the special note "three dimensional expressions such as surfaces with lots of concavo-convex are not allowed" mean that embossing cannot be used?
Embossing can be used.
Avoid using a design if it includes a three dimensional decoration on the surface that prevents the wallcovering from being rolled up.
Can a pearl-like color be used in the design?
Yes.
I would like to see wallcovering examples. Where should I go to see them.
You can visit one of our Sangetsu showrooms or browse through the digital catalogue on our website to see examples of wallcoverings.
Check the links below for further details.

When a submission has a large pattern design that uses the full A2 size (landscape layout), it is possible that a portion of the pattern design may extend beyond the trim edge.
To avoid that, should I use a conceptual drawing to explain the design?
If the pattern design is larger than an A2 size, use a conceptual drawing to express the entire design.
There is no specification to indicate a trimming location. Therefore, cut out and use the most representative or expressive part of the design or concept.
Is it OK to use any paper or drawing material for the design illustration?
There is no specific drawing material or paper that must be used for the design illustration.
Feel free to express your design either by outputting digital data or by freehand.
However, always affix the design illustration to a drawing board for submission.
*Refer to entry requirements
There are drawing boards that are no greater than 1 mm in thickness, but they apparently are not available in certain art supply stores.
It is OK to use any drawing paper as long as its sturdy paper and not flimsy?
There are some stores that do not stock drawing boards that are no greater than 1 mm in thickness.
Please purchase the drawing board from stores or online stores that have drawing boards in that thickness range.

Designer’s comment
I drew the scratch lines with a sharp metallic bar by scraping the black painted aluminum foil covered the undercoat, which is made of layers of marble paste. I thought that I could make dynamic space by using strong, uneven lines that were slanted. Making a piece of art as a painter and make a design for wallpaper are the same to me. They does not look flamboyant but the underground texture which does not come out on the surface is quite important to my work. I am glad that such part of my work was evaluated.
